The Mapuche Indians knew from way back when, that the maqui berry had medicinal value. They had in fact used the fruit as a cure for ailments ranging from constipation, to a sore throat, to tumors. Science has since looked at the fruit and found that the belief and practices of the Indians did have some merit. The maqui berry today could be considered the poster fruit of fruits, and has a multiplicity of uses. It has been confirmed as the fruit having the highest antioxidant level per 100 grams, and by virtue of this is dubbed king of the superfruits. The maqui berry has a rating of 27600 as compared to the next on the list, the acai berry, which is at 16700. Superfruit is simply a term used to describe fruits with exceptionally high antioxidant levels and equally high nutritional health promoting properties.
